Deepak Kumar, a local gym owner in Uttarakhand, emerged as the 'hero' of Kotdwar after he stood up for an elderly Muslim man, being harassed by a group of men over the name of his shop - Baba School Dress.

He now faces himself named as an accused in one of three FIRs filed so far in the case.

It happened last week when a group of men, reportedly associated with Bajrang Dal, asked the 70-year-old Muslim man to remove 'Baba' from the name. They claimed that the name could “cause confusion” with Siddhbali Baba, a famous Hanuman temple in Kotdwar.

As Deepak intervened, the men asked him his name to which he said, "My name is Mohammad Deepak". “I wanted to show them we are all one,” he later said.

In days since, Deepak has faced threats and groups have gathered at his doorstep, raising communal slogans against him.

So far, 3 cases have been registered in the matter.

The first is against 30-40 unidentified people involved in the protest. A 2nd case was registered based on a complaint filed by the shopkeeper Vakil Ahmed, who accused the protesters of using abusive and casteist language.

In his complaint, Ahmed stated that 3-4 men claiming to be Bajrang Dal members warned him to change its name. “They said the consequences would not be good if I didn’t comply,” the complaint read.

Deepak and his alleged associates are named in the 3rd case, filed over the use of derogatory language.

Meanwhile, Deepak posted a video on his Instagram, in which he says, “I am not a Hindu, I am not a Muslim, I am not a Sikh, and I am not a Christian. First and foremost, I am a human being. Because after I die, I have to answer to God and to humanity, not to any religion.”
