The White Planthopper (Ricania speculum) is actually a misnomer, as Ricania speculum is typically referred to as the Black Planthopper due to its dark, mottled wings. However, the confusion might arise because nymphs (immature stages) of Ricania speculum are often lighter in color and can appear white or woolly.

Nymphs are smaller, have a more rounded body, and are covered in a white, fluffy or waxy substance. This gives them a distinctly different look from adults, leading some to incorrectly refer to them as "white planthoppers."

Like adults, the nymphs feed on plant sap, but they tend to be more gregarious, often found in clusters on plant stems or leaves.
