William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night topped the bill at Malaysia's open air theatre festival in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, this week.

The open air theatre festival has become a regular fixture in the grounds of the Carcossa building, once the residence of the British High Commissioner.

Malaysia's small but active English theatre community braved the rain to perform Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in the open air.

Their tenacity was rewarded. About 400 people turned up each night throughout the play's ten day run.

None seemed put off by the director's contemporary interpretation.

The play's opening lines ''If music be the food of love, play on'' set the scene for a rock- opera style two-hour performance.

Despite the almost daily showers, the combination of rock music and Shakespearean humour kept the audience in their seats.

The ten night run opened a month-long theatre festival in the grounds of Carcosa house, once the lavish residence of the British High Commissioner.

You get used to seeing theatre indoors. We thought let's do it outside. It's ... it's magical in a different way when its outdoors. It's a certain outside that you cannot capture inside a theatre.

The theatre company, who call themselves Instant Cafe, are mostly known for their comedy revues.

It isn't the first time that the Bard's plays have been performed in the open air here.

Four years ago, Instant Cafe did A Midsummer Nights Dream in the grounds.
