While I was collecting acorns I came across these strange spiky things, growing out of the acorn cups. It turns out they are ‘Knopper galls’ a kind of oak gall made by the gall wasp.
Oak galls are a growth on the oak tree that contain lots of tannins, making them useful for making ink and natural dye.
I found so many oak galls that I decided to try some dye experiments.
I also sprouted the acorns I collected, hopefully I can grow some oak trees next year!
