Here I show how the AUTOBLOCK friction hitch is tied around a doubled rope using a 25 inch, 7mm Sterling sewn loop around 2 x 11.8mm strands of Drenaline rope, with both ends of the loop secured together by way of a locking carabiner. This is, as far as I'm concerned, the easiest friction hitch that anyone can learn and never forget. It allows a climber to ascend a doubled rope, as well as to descend it by applying down-rope pressure at the top of the hitch using your thumb and index/middle fingers. This sewn loop weighs next to nothing and it never hurts to have one handy if you're going to do some climbing of any type. Several other friction hitches can also be made using the same loop, and it can be used as an attachment point or anchor if it is of sufficient MBS (minimum breaking strength) and diameter; thus, it is a versatile tool that could save your life should you be rappelling down El Capitan and somehow drop your ATC. You're going to want to use your backup sewn loop and use the autoblock.
