This video summarizes all the research that I’ve done in regards to Covid-19 and theme parks reopening. I have 2 predictions on the topic. Before I could come to these 2 predictions, I had to ask/research 3 very difficult questions:

1. What capacity is considered safe once a theme park reopens?
2. Is it safe to reopen a theme park without a vaccine or without having reached herd immunity?
3. How will hospitals be doing with the cases they have by the time the theme parks reopen?

To answer my first question, I had to find out how many visitors Disneyland gets per year. (Side note: all of my research is based on the state of California; I chose the state with the most theme parks in an effort to keep things simple). I looked on this website to find out how many visitors visit Disneyland each year:

Disneyland gets about 50,000 visitors per day and between 16-18 million visitors per year! When you think about those numbers in relation to Covid-19, it’s pretty overwhelming. Even if Disneyland was able to restructure every ride, line, and restaurant to comply with social distancing they still would not be able to maintain control with those kinds of numbers. So unless Disneyland is willing to open the gates for a small amount of people, there is not a way for them to safely reopen any time soon.

My 2nd question that I researched was whether or not it would be safe to open a theme park without a vaccine or without having reached herd immunity. The answer is obviously no. Even if Disney asked all immunocompromised and the elderly to stay home, there is just no good way of making everyone comply. Allowing big numbers to enter the parks would be too dangerous and put too many people at risk. I found information relating to vaccines and herd immunity here:

My third question that I researched was in regards to hospitals and the concern that if they are too overwhelmed with their current number of Covid-19 cases from California residents, they certainly won’t be able to handle cases from travelers who come from other places to visit Disneyland. It’s hard to predict exactly what will happen, but hospitals in California have not been as overwhelmed as much as they were expecting to be. After researching these questions thoroughly, drawing on my own knowledge of Public Health, and thinking about what is simply reasonable, I have come to the following predictions:

1. Disney parks will not be able to reopen safely (to their full capacity anyway), until a vaccine for Covid-19 becomes available or until we reach herd immunity. Since the soonest it’s looking like we will have a vaccine is next year, that means that Disney parks will probably not be opening up until next year.

2. My 2nd prediction is that Disneyland will reopen in phases—similar to Shanghai Disneyland. They have reopened sections of the resort that have limited dining and limited hours of operation. I believe one of the first parts of Disneyland to reopen will be Downtown Disney. Perhaps a few restaurants and shops will open up and the governor of California (Gavin Newsom) will see how things go. If social distancing occurs and restaurants maintain adequate sanitation, then more and more restaurants/shops will probably be able to reopen in time.

I recognize that this is not what anyone wants to hear! It is painful to face certain realities. The last important point is this: as long as schools and other government buildings are shut down, we can be sure that theme parks will be shut down as well. It is a sad but true reality.

I am hoping for the best! The antiviral medication Remdesivir is showing great promise in clinical trials. Perhaps other treatments and therapies will become available as time goes on; it would be great if we could speed up the recovery process for the people who have Covid-19.
