Ground-fault protection at docking facilities can be confusing if you don’t understand the purpose of the safety devices involved. NEC Section 555.35 outlines the requirements for both Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) and Ground-Fault Protection of Equipment (GFPE); applying these requirements correctly is key to keeping both people and property safe.

GFCIs protect people from electric shock by detecting ground-fault current and shutting off power quickly and on the other hand, GFPE devices are intended to protect equipment from damaging ground-faults.
