How safe is a Chiropractic adjustment?

Well, the only way to find out is to compare it statistically to medical procedures. So, lets GO!

The bottom line is that there are approximately 44,000 Practicing Chiropractors in the US. If the average chiropractor sees 50 people per week, practices 44 weeks a year, and gives 1 neck adjustment per visit that would = 96,800,000 (96.8 million!) neck adjustments per year.

So, what are the chances of injury?
Well, no one pays closer attention to injury statistics than Malpractice Insurance carriers.

There was a study done by Dr. Scott Haldeman, who reviewed malpractice records for a 10-year period between 1988-1997. Review of the application of 134.5 million cervical adjustments, showed that the records indicated there were 23 reported cases of stroke or vertebral artery dissection (that is tearing of the artery usually leading to a stroke).

That means there was a only a .000017% chance of any incidence of injury. Of this group, 10 of the patients already had complicating factors associated with vascular disease such as high blood pressure, usage of oral contraceptives, or a history of smoking. The actual incidence of stroke or VAD following cervical manipulation was found to be one per 5.85 million cervical adjustments.
That means that the average chiropractor could work for 1,430 years (or practice 48 full chiropractic careers!) before they might be involved with this type of litigation.

Lets look at some medical procedures
2.2 million people experience in-hospital, adverse reactions to prescribed drugs per
year.
20 million unnecessary antibiotics are prescribed annually for viral infections
7.5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures are performed annually, and
8.9 million people are exposed to unnecessary hospitalization every year!
The most stunning statistic, however, is that the total number of deaths caused by
conventional medicine is an astounding 783,936 per year!
That is a mind-boggling 2,147 people killed daily!That's 7 jumbo jet plane crashes, each and every day.That's a 9-11 incident occurring EVERY OTHER DAY...FOREVER. God help
us all.
Furthermore, one large epidemiological study (21) estimated that the death rate for NSAID- associated gastrointestinal problems was 0.04% per year among patients receiving NSAIDs
specifically for osteoarthritis and related conditions. This figure extrapolates to 3,200 deaths in the US per year.
Less conservative treatments such as neck surgery are also used for some conditions similar to those chiropractors treat successfully with spinal adjustments. There is a three to four percent rate of complication for cervical spine surgery (25), and 4,000-10,000 deaths per million. These risk rates are thousands of times greater than the most extreme estimates of risks from spinal adjustments. Which is .4%-1%

To put this in all in context it is a 1 in 2,000,000 chance of death if you drive your car 35 miles Remember there is a 1 in 5.85 million chance of injury with a chiropractic adjustment.

So in closing, with a resounding YES, Chiropractic is SAFE.
