Anchor: Join me as I explore the history of the Fire Department and also the origins of modern fire safety starting in Battle Creek, but also covering other areas of Michigan. The Great Chicago fire of 1871 which lastest 3 days, and burned over 3.3 square miles destroying 17,500 buildings, killing 300 people and leaving 100,000 people homeless was an event that inspired many communities across the nation to invest in hand fire engines to fight fires with. Originally the province of volunteers, the role of fire departments in communties grew over the years as needs changed, skills improved and new fire fighting tools and engines became available.

This is the story of that journey, which includes vintage photos from the era. Another major and more deadly fire also happened in Chicago in 1904, which changed the history of fire safety in building ordinances across the U.S. and Europe in the decades that followed. It is a fascinating history of brave, determined and innovative men who run into burning buildings and put out raging infernos.
