Falling pollution partly blamed for Cyclone Amphan in India and Bangladesh

A climate scientist believes a drop in pollution due to the coronavirus lockdown could have exacerbated Cyclone Amphan in India and Bangladesh.

Professor Vinoj Velu of the Indian Institute of Technology in Bhubaneswar, said a drop in sooty particles in the atmosphere allows more of the sun's energy to reach the sea.

The wind speed in cyclones is largely determined by the temperature of the sea, which is also affected by global warming.
