A deadly fire at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana may have started when sparklers attached to champagne bottles were held too close to the ceiling, authorities say. The blaze broke out in the early hours of New Year’s Day, killing 40 people and injuring 119. Investigators are examining the bar’s materials, fire safety rules, capacity, and how many people were inside, and say prosecutions are possible. Officials are still formally identifying victims, while many injured people remain in critical condition and some have been transferred to specialist burn centres in other European countries.
