Here I go through the basics of citrus tree pruning. I prune a small lemon tree that is relatively healthy. I cover proper pruning techniques, do's and don'ts, and potential problems.

Before we actually start doing any pruning on this lemon tree, we're going to remove all of the fruit from it. Leaving the fruit prevents the tree from fully moving onto its next hormonal stage which will focus on growth, flowering & new fruit development. That stresses the tree out!

Now it's time to look at the tree's structure. We want to achieve a bushy balance but not foliage so thick that you can't see through it because then the sun & airflow can't get through. Branches going out or down need to be snipped back.

When making cuts, identify a new leader. That means you're making cuts back at the crotches where the branch starts or a new one does. This is also the time to remove dead or diseased wood as well as crossing branches.
