New Jersey’s beaches are more than just summer destinations—they’re critical nesting grounds for rare and vulnerable shorebirds. Species like the piping plover, American oystercatcher, least tern, and black skimmer return each year to lay their eggs directly on the sand. These birds face many threats, including habitat loss, human disturbance, and predators. Biologists from NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, along with volunteers and seasonal staff lead conservative efforts to protect these birds by monitoring nests, installing protective fencing, educating the public, and working with partners to manage and restore coastal habitats. By incorporating these methods, NJDEP Fish & Wildlife helps ensure that beach-nesting birds have a safe place to thrive along the state’s shoreline.
