Although there is an efficient, ergonomic hand position that is taught for the "fretting" hand on a double bass, my fingers--and especially my thumb--move into and out of that position while playing. This allows my hand to not become too rigid. Here, get a closer look at what my left thumb (I'm a right handed player) actually does when moving up and down the neck. The goal: have a flexible, moveable hand, along with the good intonation that comes from learning the basic hand position.
