YugabyteDB Voyager 1.5 Demo - Live Migration

YugabyteDB Voyager introduces two main features: assessing a portfolio of databases to gauge migration complexity and live migration, a significant feature that is demonstrated using the Tradex app on Oracle. This demo involves moving Tradex from Oracle to YugabyteDB, all while the app operates normally, ensuring zero disruption to end-users.

Live migration involves several phases:

1. Preparation: Set up the source database and install Voyager.
Migrate Schema: Voyager translates Oracle's schema to a Postgres-compatible format for YugabyteDB. After an assessment, modifications can be made to the translated schema.
2. Migrate Data: Data from Oracle is snapshot-exported and then bulk imported into YugabyteDB. Any data changes in Oracle are captured and applied to YugabyteDB.
3. Cutover: Once all change data is applied to YugabyteDB, the application can switch to using YugabyteDB instead of Oracle.

Three tools will be used during the demo: the Tradex app, Voyager’s CLI, and the database UI. In the UI, you'll see a migration progress bar.

After applying the schema, you can monitor migration progress on the UI. Simulating transactions in Oracle, we'll see events (or data changes) reflect on the YugabyteDB side. With every UI transaction, a corresponding event appears in YugabyteDB, confirming successful migration. At this point, it's safe to complete the cutover and switch the app to YugabyteDB.
