Listen to the fascinating sounds of the Growling riflebird - Ptiloris intercedens.

In the rainforests of Papua New Guinea there are birds of paradise that make a very interesting growling sound. These are the aptly named Growling riflebirds, closely related to Magnificent and Victoria riflebirds. The name riflebird relates to the bird's velvety black plumage that resembles the colour of the British rifle brigade uniforms.

I heard these birds calling while I was exploring the lowland rainforests on foot. To my unaccustomed ears it sounded like a cryptic corvid of sorts. I quickly set up my handheld recorder on the forest floor and left it recording for half an hour while I was taking photos nearby. Back in the studio I did some digging and managed to ID the species. This is when I realised that my crow assumption wasn't far off, since birds of paradise are said to have evolved from corvids.
