According to the Shri Bhaktamal, the Rishabh avatar is the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu, born to Maharaj Nabhi and Queen Merudevi to establish the path of asceticism and righteousness. He was born with divine marks on his body and was named 'Rishabh' (meaning 'The Best') due to his incomparable virtues and leadership. As a king, he protected his subjects with fatherly care and even used his yogic powers to bring rain to the land of Ajnabhakhanda when Indra withheld it. Eventually, he coronated his eldest son, Bharat, and renounced his kingdom to live as a detached ascetic, ultimately merging into the divine after teaching the world the essence of devotion, knowledge, and renunciation.
