~ I really dont quite know what to say here as i upload one of (for myself) the holy grail's of san francisco psychedelic folk-rock bands....this footage taken from the complete show was broadcast 8th february 1967 as part of 'kqed' series 'come up the years' which i understand only lasted for two shows with this the first followed a short time later april 25th with 'big brother and the holding co'....(correct me if i'm wrong..)...the band formed in novato around june/july '66 and a month later was playing local haunt in tiburon 'prince charlie's inn' and august also saw them playing the fillmore! not bad going for a new group who at this time was ' tor olson/tom rice/john bingham & pat hunt bass...they then met folk-artist mimi farina (sister of joan baez) and started to back her on gigs in and around the bay area....october of '66 and they parted company with her and band members rice & bingham...later phil hirsch joined on rhythm guitar and tor olson brought in his sister kay on vocals...(she had earlier been the lead in the touring version of the stage show 'the roar of the greasepaint-the smell of the crowd) and they quickly settled down to a formidible live act with tor's 'mandolin' style of playing the 12string rickenbacker making for an raga-ish sound as you can see and hear in the clip....earlier the group as a whole had been to an indian classical music teacher for lessons...the first part of the film is partly grained but quickly clears and the rest of the performance is great...the song we hear 'howdy-do' features that unique guitar styling with the band improvising nicely around it's lead...thought long lost for over 50yrs it was only after fine detective work by bassist pat hunt that he made contact with someone who had made a copy (thankgoodness) at the time on two inch tape and who kindly made a copy for pat who has kindly allowed me to upload some content here...i did edit what you see and will upload more in a few days...i couldn't believe my eyes and ears when first playing this as i have waited countless years to do so and thought i never would! enjoy...more info next upload....
