The U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force are all falling short of their recruitment goals, and new data shows few young Americans are willing to serve in the military. According to a survey from the Department of Defense, fear of physical/emotional trauma and leaving friends and family behind top the list of concerns, along with other career interests pulling potential recruits away from military service.

Retired U.S. Colonel and former Central Command spokesperson Joe Buccino spoke with Scripps News about the growing national security threat as military recruitment continues to decline.
