In this vlog I am going to show you how to reach Padargad fort which is situated in Bhimashankar area.

Padargad and Tungi forts were built to keep a vigil on the ancient Ganesh ghat trade route. This ghat/pass falls on the Bhimashankar route via Karjat-Khandas.The main purpose of these two forts was served as a watch tower and thatswhy there aren’t many structures on this fort. The two pinnacles on the fort are named as “Kalavantinicha Mahal”

Location : Bhimashankar Forest, height: 2202 ft.

The origin and history of Padargad is not well known. Aurangzeb used this fort to gain control over the fort of Peth.

How to reach Padargad :
Reach Karjat station on the Mumbai Central railway line and proceed to Khandas village by bus or auto rickshaw at 14 kms. One can reach Bhimashankar from Khandas via Shidi ghat, Gugal ghat and Ganesh ghat. The Ganesh ghat route can be used to reach the Ganesh temple in 30 minutes and the well in the ghat in another 30 minutes this well has water till January-February.Next to the well to the right a path goes through a dense forest patch. After a 30 minute trail we come to a narrow rock patch vertical window which is about 4X2X10 in dimensions. The other side of this is closed and also its roof due to landslides. One has to climb this narrow path using Chimney Climbing technique i.e. using our back and legs against the walls to move upside. There is also a bolt affixed to the upper side which can be used for rope climbing.

To the east of Padargad we can see the wall of Bhimashankar hills spread across and to its north is Siddhagad. To the north side of the fort at the base, the village we see is Padargadwadi. To the south is Peth fort and Tungi fort is to its west.

Avoid rainy season and 2 months after it. In the summers carry enough water.

All the water tanks on the fort are dried and have no water. It is advised to fill water from the well in Ganesh ghat which has water till January-February.

Aprrox budget per person is 300–500 Rs depends upon mode of travel.

Formed entirely of basaltic rocks, Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is dominated by Deciduous, Semi-evergreen and Evergreen types of forests. Bhimashankar Sanctuary is home to a subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel (or Malabar Giant Squirrel), the state animal of Maharashtra (Scientific name: Ratufa Indica Elphinstone).

कर्जत - खांडस मार्गे भिमाशंकरला जाणार्‍या पुरातन गणेश (गणपती) घाटावर नजर ठेवण्यासाठी पदरगड व तुंगी या किल्ल्यांची निर्मित करण्यात आली होती. हे दोनही किल्ले टेहळणीसाठी बांधण्यात आले होते, त्यामुळे या किल्ल्यांवर फारसे अवशेष नाहीत. पदरगडावर जाण्याचा मार्ग ठिकठिकाणी तुटल्यामुळे प्रस्तरारोहणाचे सामान वापरूनच गड सर करता येतो.पदरगडावरील २ कातळ सुळक्यांना "कलावंतीणीचा महाल" या नावाने ओळखले जाते. इतिहास : पदरगड कोणी व केंव्हा बांधला याची माहीती उपलब्ध नाही. या किल्ल्याचा उल्लेख औरंगजेबाने पेठचा किल्ला घेण्याच्या प्रयन्तांचा एक भाग म्हणून आजूबाजूचे किल्ले घेतले. त्यावेळी पदरगड व तुंगी हे पूरातन किल्ले त्याने टेहळणीसाठी पुन्हा बांधून घेतले. पोहोचण्याच्या वाटा : पदरगडावर जाण्यासाठी मुंबईहून कर्जतला यावे. कर्जतहून खांडस या गावी यावे. खांडस ते कर्जत सुमारे १४ कि.मी चे अंतर आहे. कर्जतहून खांडसला बसने अथवा रिक्षेने जाण्याची सोय आहे. खांडस गावातून शिडी घाट , गुगळ घाट आणि गणेश घाट या तीन वाटांनी भीमाशंकर गाठता येते. त्यापैकी गणेश (गणपती) घाटाने अर्ध्या तासात घाटातील गणपती मंदिरापाशी पोहोचता येते. तेथून अर्ध्या तासात घाटातील विहिरी जवळ पोहोचतो. या विहिरीला जानेवारी-फेब्रुवारी पर्यंत पाणी असते. याठिकाणी पाणी भरुन घ्यावे कारण गडावर पाणी नाही. विहिरीच्या पुढे (लगेचच) एक वाट उजवीकडील जंगलात शिरते. या वाटेने जंगल संपल्यावर लागणारा खडा चढून आपण अर्ध्या तासात कातळाच्या एका चिंचोळ्या बोळापाशी येतो. ४ फूट लांब २ फूट रूंद व १० फूट उंच असलेल्या या बोळाची दुसरी बाजू बंद आहे. तसेच वरून पडलेल्या दगडांमुळे याचे छ्त ही बंद झालेले आहे. या ठिकाणी एका वेळी फक्त २ माणसे उभी राहू शकतात. "चिमणी क्लाईंब तंत्राचा" (पाठ व पाय एकाचवेळी भिंतीवर रोवून वर चढणे) वापर करून हे अंतर चढून जावे लागते. याठिकाणी वरच्या बाजूला एक बोल्ट मारलेला आहे. त्यात रोप लावूनही वर चढता येते.
