Lt. Gen Shokin Chauhan, Former D.G. Assam Rifles, in Samvad:
Discussing
1. Deputy Chief Lt. Gen. Rahul R. Singh recently spoke about how China was providing live satellite feeds- “live inputs” as he called them, to Pakistan about Indian counter actions during Op Sindoor. This is apart from the fighter jets, ADs and other defensive and offensive Chinese weapons being used by Pakistan. Now it is being reported that China will be delivering the JF-35A to PAF at 50% discount. As a strategic analyst, how do you view this military coalition between “Iron Clad brothers” and how ominous it is for India?
2. For decades, the world has viewed the China–Pakistan relationship as one forged in steel and tested by time. From diplomatic niceties describing it as “higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the oceans, and sweeter than honey” to strategic analysts considering it the cornerstone of Beijing's South Asia strategy, the image of an unbreakable China–Pakistan axis has been carefully curated and widely accepted.
Yet, you write- “behind the ornate façades and ceremonial handshakes lies a more complex, uneasy reality,” perhaps alluding to the fact that the path of China-Pakistan nexus is not as rosy, as it appears to be.
What this “complex, uneasy reality?"
3. For decades, China seems to be supporting the Myanmarese Junta which has been reigning except for a brief spell by Aung San Suu Kyi. At least that is what the common perception is. Here again you suggest something which disproves established knowledge; “China, ever the master of ambiguity, projects itself as a benevolent neighbour, a partner in development, and a guardian of regional stability. But beneath this fragrant surface lies a stench: a history of arms shipments to rebels, covert sanctuaries offered across the border, political manipulation, and a strategy of asymmetric destabilisation that has kept Myanmar perpetually off-balance.”
The assumption after reading this is that China is playing both sides i.e the Junta and the rebels. Now this is puzzling as to why an aspiring superpower, will two time two partners. How and why does it do that?
4. Despite Chinese undependable relations, countries around India’s periphery seem to rush for the Chinese embrace. We already have the example of the economic disaster of Sri Lanka and Hambantota before us. Yet Bangladesh is offering Lalpurmonihat airstrip and buying Chinese weapons. Nepal is engaged in infra projects allowing China access up to Indo-Nepal borders. Why do these countries fall into this trap?
5. What are the areas in which India and China can look for reconciliation?
