The US warned Venezuela and Cuba about the docking of Iranian "weapon-carrying" ships

A senior Joe Biden administration official has said that these ships are likely to be carrying weapons that were sold during the Iran-Venezuela deal last year during the administration of Donald Trump. The type of these weapons has not been determined, but last summer there were reports that Venezuela was considering buying missiles, including long-range ones, from Iran.

A senior administration official told Politico: "The delivery of such weapons is provocative and poses a threat to our partners in the Western Hemisphere. "We reserve the right, in coordination with our partners, to take the necessary measures to prevent the transfer or delivery of such weapons."

US Defense Department officials have said that the White House has pressured Caracas and Havana through diplomatic channels not to allow these ships to dock in their countries.

Iran and Venezuela, both under heavy US sanctions, have developed close ties in recent years and established joint cooperation in the fields of industry and energy.

Two officials familiar with the case said U.S. intermediaries had signaled to Venezuelan officials that the U.S. would be less likely to consider sanctions relief if the ships docked in the country's ports.


These ships have traveled more than half of their way to Venezuela in the Atlantic Ocean. American officials have been monitoring the movement of ships from the Persian Gulf to the east coast of Africa and then to the northwest on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. These ships are now located 1,500 km from Cape Town, the capital of South Africa.
