The 18 electron rule is a bookkeeping method to determine if a transition metal complex achieves a full valence of electrons or a noble element configuration. This is sometimes also called the Effective Atomic Number rule.

Two methods of counting are introduced, donor pair (or ionic) counting and neutral pair counting.
