The droning intonations and obscure cadential prolongations that Scriabin's late music shares with the undulating ebb and flow of Russian chant are nowhere more evident than in the Seventh sonata, an evocation of Russian bells and prayer. Perhaps its no accident that its magniloquent coda, culminating in a 25 note cluster, is an evocation of the coronation music from Musorgsky's Boris Godunov. Innumerable hypnotic moments allude to such liturgical symbols and recitation, which share an ideology with the religious ceremonial functions of Christian Orthodoxy as much as Buddhism. But it also demands the elucidation of extra-musical dimensions that not only co-exist with, but migrate into the music itself. Scriabin's is a sacramental sphere where music assumes a votive function as it emulates prayer, thus fulfilling its own concept as the prolongation of a private epiphany.
