Our symposium will take up sophistry not only as a matter of historical concern but also contemporary contestation: as one way to think through not only the relation between the true and the false, but also the "ancient" and the "modern," not only the philosophical past but also the future of philosophy.

Barbara Cassin is director of research at the CNRS, the director of the Léon Robin Center for Research on Ancient Thought, and President of the Collège International de Philosophie. Trained as a philosopher and philologist specializing in Ancient Greece, her research focuses on the relationship between philosophy and what is posited as not being philosophy: sophism, rhetoric, literature. Among many other volumes, she is the author of L'Effet Sophistique (1995), Jacques le Sophiste: Lacan, logos et psychanalyse (2012), and in English, Sophistical Practice: Toward a Consistent Relativism (2014).
