Panel discussion on partnering with patients and advanced Patient Centered Outcomes Research goals.

The World Health Organization recognizes the need to engage patients in their own care through health literacy, treatment decision making and ultimately self-management of chronic conditions. This engagement can occur through a process of shared decision making, where patients are involved as active partners with the clinician in treatment decisions, and is a way to help patients feel informed about and involved in their treatment.
Clinicians and patients work together as active partners to clarify acceptable medical options and choose appropriate treatments.
However, there is a lack of awareness in how to bring PCOR/CER as evidence to support shared decision making into the medical curriculum. In addition, there has been little shared on how to meaningfully involve patients in this work. The goal of this session is to explore how medical educators can better bring PCOR/CER into medical education and how this might be done through partnership with patients themselves.
