Whitby by the Sewage?

Grey skies. Cold air. Expensive coats. Hot coffee. Dogs in pushchairs.
And yes… sewage in the harbour.

Despite being voted the most boring seaside town in the UK, Whitby remains absolutely rammed. The cafés are full, the pubs are quiet, parking is theoretical, and somewhere nearby someone has just paid £6 for a pasty that didn’t even come from Yorkshire.

In this Whitby Update, Gary Bender takes a look at life in town after Christmas — from Boxing Day madness and winter culture, to Danfo toilets, card machines that apparently weren’t taking money, and finally a serious issue affecting people using the sea around Whitby.

Several surfers reported feeling unwell after surfing locally, prompting a look at publicly available information from Surfers Against Sewage regarding recent discharges into Whitby Harbour.

Along the way, Stephen the Seagull remains overhead. Watching. Waiting. Managing.
