ANSA CERVICALIS - USMLE STEP 1 : ANIMATED ANATOMY VIDEO LECTURE

Ansa Cervicalis

The ansa cervicalis is a loop of nerves which are formed for the first three cervical nerves (C1–C3) and innervate the infrahyoid (“strap”) muscles. The ansa cervicalis has a superior and inferior root.

The superior root of the ansa cervicalis is created by the first cervical nerve (C1). This root passes in the fibers of the hypoglossal nerve before coming away from it within the carotid triangle and thus forms its superior root. It passes round the occipital artery and passes down to the carotid sheath. It innervates the omohyoid muscle’s superior belly as well as the superior portion of the sternothyroid and the sternohyoid muscles and unites with the inferior root of the ansa cervicalis.

The inferior root of the ansa cervicalis is formed by the unification of the second and third cervical nerves. It courses inferiorly on the outer aspect of the internal jugular vein, then crosses roughly midway down this vessel to pass anterior to this vein. It then passes in an anterior direction to unite with the superior root of the ansa cervicalis anterior to the common carotid artery. The inferior root of the ansa cervicalis may pass between the common carotid artery and the internal jugular vein. All the infrahyoid (“strap”) muscles are innervated by the ansa cervicalis, except the thyrohyoid which is innervated by the first cervical nerve which accompanies the hypoglossal nerve for a short distance.
