“When one door closes, another opens.”
This proverb means that when something in your life disappears, something else will come to take its place.
In other words, if an opportunity or advantage in your life ceases to be available to you, you will definitely be able to find new opportunities or new advantages. Or, if someone good in your life leaves, you certainly will realize that there are other good people around, or they will come around shortly.
People often lament losing something good in their life - such as a good job, a good friend moving away, a loved one passing away, a favourite store closing down, amongst the many things that are lost in life.
Most of the time, we cannot do anything to reverse these losses or change them. So, we pretty much have to accept what’s happened and move on. However, many people do not move on and stay fixated on what they’ve lost, they stay focused on what’s gone.
We really shouldn’t deny what’s happened, we really shouldn’t try to get things back the way they were - especially when it’s impossible. Instead, we should look to the future, look forward to or look around for the other good, the other opportunities that are in our lives.
A good example of this is if you’re laid off from a high-paying job you loved, because the industry is shrinking and no longer profitable. You might spend your time looking for a new position at one of the remaining companies in the field. However, many months pass and you aren’t able to find any new positions - the industry is dying and so are the companies within.
If you finally acknowledge the reality and start to train for another field or job that you’re interested in, you’ll see plenty of new opportunities open for you. Once you’re finally done your training and start off with a new company in a new field, you’ll discover that it’s just as enjoyable as your old job and there’s a sea of opportunity in front of you.
Thus, the proverb, “When one door closes, another opens,” tells us that you need not lament or dwell on a loss, or seek something to replace it - something, perhaps something better is just around the corner. You only need open your eyes, pay attention and take action!
Similarly, in Japanese, there’s a proverb that goes, “There’s a god who puts you down, as well as a god who picks you up.” In Chinese, they say that “Heaven does not block one’s path.”
This proverb is attributed to the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, but is actually part of a longer statement: “When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
So, the next time a door shuts in front of you, don’t just stand there staring at it. Start looking for the door that has opened for you and move on with your life!
