IBM's Deskstar 60GXP line of 7,200 RPM IDE hard drives would be a follow-up to the much-maligned (and often unreliable) Deskstar 75GXP line. This drive family, introduced on November 14, 2000, came in three capacity variants (20, 40, and 60 "GB"). Some of its competition at the 60GXP's launch window included Seagate's Barracuda ATA III, Western Digital's Caviar WD200BB and WD400BB, and Maxtor's DiamondMax Plus 60.

According to IBM's press release on the 60GXP, the estimated retail price for the flagship "60GB" model was $355 ($615 in 2023 dollars).
