Listen to the very peculiar sound of the Laughing kookaburra - Dacelo novaeguineae.

In the Australian bush there lives a creature whose call has become iconic thanks to its overuse in Hollywood films and other media. Kookaburras are oversized kingfishers with a voracious appetite. They are native to Eastern Australia and have been introduced to other parts of the continent and to New Zealand.

Their memorable calls have earned them names like the "Laughing jackass", among others. Many aboriginal names for this creature are onomatopoeic in nature, including guuguubarra which is what it's called in the Wiradjuri language of SE Australia.

The laughing sound of the Kookaburra is used to establish and keep a territory. The syrinx that these birds possess allows them to create calls that are more complex than the ones of other birds. Research has shown that the song of the Kookaburra is learned and not inherited, although the structure for making these sounds can be present at an early age.
