Norman Gunston - Kiss Army (Countdown - 23/11/80)

Norman opens the show to plug his latest single. He repeats the performance he gave at the AFI Awards back on September 17th, using all the same props and the same two female dancers. This time, however, he opts to not use the guitar pyrotechnic effect that burnt his hand the last time, and instead ignites a sparkler with a cigarette lighter. Once again, he sings live to a pre-recorded backing track, which allows him to slip in some ad-libs that are not present on the 45 version. The harmonica solo, fortunately, is part of the prerecorded backing this time.

At the song's end, we see Molly Meldrum deliver a snub to Norman by suggesting the record-buying public not purchase this single. This is quite possibly due to some ill-feeling engendered by the flip side of "Kiss Army", a spoken word track called "Normdrum" in which Norman Gunston delivers a wicked and somewhat cruel parody of Molly Meldrum's "Humdrum" segment (and it's Garry MacDonald doing Norman Gunston doing Molly Meldrum, which in itself is a bit of a head-bender).

Norman wanted to perform "Normdrum" as a sketch item on that week's show, but Molly refused him permission (somewhat understandable really!) so, as a small revenge, Norman got the studio audience to chant "Do yourself a favour!" during Molly's "Humdrum" segment.
