In this Ramadan reflection, Shaykh Abdal Hakim explores Imam Ghazali’s powerful parable of the heart as farmland. Faith is the seed, good actions are the irrigation, and the Day of Judgment is the harvest. True hope, he explains, is not passive optimism but disciplined effort combined with trust in Allah. Planting, watering, and weeding the heart are necessary before one can genuinely hope for forgiveness. To neglect prayer and good character while expecting salvation is not hope but illusion. Ramadan is a time of muhasaba, a time to tend the garden of the heart and ensure that our hope is sincere, active, and rooted in obedience rather than complacency.
