In this video, we'll take a walk around the ancient Wudianshi Traditional Blocks of Quanzhou in China's Fujian province.

Wudianshi (Chinese: 五店市传统街区), meaning 'Five Shops City', is a popular tourist attraction located in the Jinjiang suburb of Quanzhou because it is an architectural gold mine, filled with over a hundred well preserved traditional Chinese buildings, many in the beautiful Fujianese architectural style with western influences. The wonderful district preserves many ancient residential & commercial buildings as well as temples & ancestral halls including the Cai (菜) & Zhuang (荘) clan halls which are seen in this video. Architectural examples from the Ming, Qing & the Republic of China era are protected here in a museum-like area measuring roughly 20 acres (8.4 hectares).

The history of this place dates back to the early 700s, during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, when five members of the Cai family opened up restaurants & hotels on the main road at the foot of the Qingyang mountain in order to service travelers in the Fujian province. The move was a successful one & the area became well traveled for it's scenery as well as for the wine, food & hospitality which was famous throughout the region. It was the epicenter of a town that eventually developed into what we know today as Jinjiang City & which eventually merged into Quanzhou City by the time of the Ming & Qing dynasties.

唐朝开元年间，蔡姓七世孙5人，在青阳山下的官道上，开设5间饮食店以方便行人，酒旗招风，饭菜飘香，声名远播，被誉为“青阳蔡，五店市”——自此，“五店市”遂为青阳之别称。

唐开元年间，青阳有“五店市”之称，五店市传统街区是晋江城区的发源地；晋江市区的青阳街道和梅岭街道的“青阳”和“梅岭”皆源于境内的青阳山（又称：青梅山) 。随着社会的发展，经济日趋繁荣，“五店市”在明清时期已然成为一片繁华的街区，商店鳞次栉比，街道车水马龙，更有美轮美奂的红砖厝民居星罗棋布。

该街区独具闽南特色的“皇宫起”红砖建筑、中西合璧的洋楼等明清、民国至现代的特色建筑保存完好。

2010年随着晋江城市建设的进行，五店市迎来了新的历史时期。 2012年4月19日正式启动开工建设。 2015年5月1日，经过保护性开发的五店市正式对外开放。 2015年9月荣获国家4A级旅游景区。

P.S. Besides preserving Chinese architecture, the Wudianshi Traditional Blocks also function as a place for traditional Chinese art displays, musical concerts & cultural performances. Shows of Chinese lion dances (舞狮), Jinjiang hand or glove puppetry (布袋戏), Fujian Nanyin (南音) & Gaojia Opera (闽南语：Ko-kah-hì; 高甲戏) are often held at the theater locations within Wudianshi.
