Do background checks stop crime? This is one of the most common gun myths... Background checks prevent crime in theory, but NOT in reality...

When looking at this issue, it's important to look into what a background check actually does. A background check simply determines whether or not an individual is legally able to purchase or possess a firearm. This means they look at things like criminal history, past drug use, dishonorable military discharges, open warrants, history of violence, and yes, your mental health history.

A background check is able to make an assumption about your future behaviors based on your past behaviors, but it does NOT determine a person's intent or control somebody's actions. Watch this video to learn whether or not background checks prevent crime or not!
