In the UK alone, every three and half minutes, someone does something deeply embarrassing, easily avoidable, and tricky to put right; accidentally putting petrol into a diesel car or vice versa. It's called misfuelling, and it can cause major damage to the engine and fuel system, which can cost a small fortune to fix. So to avoid doing it yourself, here's how you can tell which fuel your car takes.
Rental companies will often put labels or stickers on the car's key, dashboard or fuel door. If you can't find any of these, pop open the fuel door and you might see something saying 'Unleaded Gasoline Only', 'Diesel Fuel Only' or something similar.
Still not found any clues? The back of the car might just help out. Cars that have diesel engines often have a D in their full model name. Manufacturers use initials such as such as 'TDI', 'HDi', 'GTD', 'dCi', 'JTD' and so on.
Finally, when you're at the pump, if you accidentally attempt to fill a petrol car with diesel, you'll have to push the nozzle really hard to make it to fit, as diesel nozzles are thicker than petrol ones… sadly it's easy to put a petrol nozzle into a diesel car… so… try not to do that.
