In 1840, brothers John and James Grant scouted Speyside for the ideal Scottish whiskey site. Selecting the region for its superior two-row barley and pristine water from the Back Burn, a River Spey tributary, they erected their distillery. Pioneering the Spey valley's northern railroad facilitated supplies and solidified their legacy in Scotch whiskey.

In 1872, the dynamic James “The Major” Grant inherited and innovated the distillery, employing pioneering techniques like water cooling purifiers and unique pot still designs for a refined spirit. In the present, Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm upholds The Major's legacy, continuing family traditions, and techniques since 1873, living and distilling on the same grounds, safeguarding the distillery's historic essence.
