Northern Wheatear, Oenanthe oenanthe, is a fairly common sight around British coastal areas and marshes as it migrates in autumn. Wheatears mostly breed in northern areas of the UK as well as in more northern areas such as Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland and pass through other areas on their migratory route. Coastal areas provide the areas of short grass that Wheatears like to search for invertebrates in, so that they can get the energy they need to make their remarkable migration. This juvenile Northern Wheatear was quite tolerant of me as it fed next to the river Thames at RSPB Rainham Marshes in London.
