(29 Jun 2021) The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday repatriated 18 Cuban nationals who were found at sea this week attempting to migrate illegally into the United States.
The 18 men were located on three separate boats as they made their way through the Florida Straits in an attempt to reach US shores.
The Coast Guard Sentinel-class cutter Charles Sexton brought the men back to a dock on Orozco Bay, 32 miles west of Havana, where Cuban authorities from the Ministry of Interior, the local border patrol and healthcare professionals received them.
For security reasons, Cuban Border Guard divers inspect the surrounding water and the dock whenever a US Coast Guard boat arrives.
The returned men, wearing white disposable jumpsuits and facemasks provided by the US Coast Guard, disembarked carrying black garbage bags containing their personal belongings.
Cuban healthcare workers sprayed the men with chlorine-laced water on the dock and took their temperature as preventive measures for COVID-19 before they boarded a bus.
The men will now spend 15 days in a state-run quarantine facility before being returned to their homes.
Cuba does not prosecute nor arrest returnees unless they were involved in human trafficking, violence or stealing a boat.
The last two years of Donald Trump's presidency wreaked havoc on the Cuban economy thanks to strengthened restrictions and the tightening of the 60-year-old embargo against the island nation.
Coupled with the world-wide pandemic, the economic strain on Cuba's population has encouraged many to attempt migrating by sea at levels that hadn't been seen in years.  
"We have had 24 repatriation operations this year with 377 people (returned) which is significant if we compare it with 2017 when the joint declaration of the migratory agreements was signed, where there was immediately a decrease," said Colonel Victor Gómez, who as head Harbor Master for Cuba's Border Guard troops was present for Tuesday's repatriation.
After the signing of US-Cuba migration accords in 2017, the number of Cuban migrants interdicted by the US Coast Guard fell to 259 over the following year.
In the past two weeks alone more than 100 Cubans have been repatriated after being picked up at sea.
