Pakistani women hold 'aurat march' for equality, gender justice

Thousands of women rally across several cities to demand more safety and better working conditions.
The Aurat March 2019 took place in all major cities of Pakistan today (Friday) commemorating the International Women's Day.
The primary Aurat March 2019 event commenced at 3:30PM in Lahore at the Press club , where women, trans, and non-binary folks then took to the Mall road to participate in the main rally. The march concluded at 6:30PM.


On 8th of March 2019, women of Pakistan are set to march for social and economic equality in Karachi and Lahore. This will be second gathering of its kind after Aurat March 2018. The question is that are we going to witness same kind of male chauvinism and misogyny afterwards just like we experienced last year? Remember a banner saying ‘Khana khud garam kar-lo’ ignited a spark in men. Well, the answer is Yes. Pakistani men have the ability to manipulate every other campaign started for women rights just because their toxic masculinity doesn’t allow them to see a liberated woman. They malign and ridicule every such campaign and make memes on social media. Whether it is Aurat march or a campaign to end dowry, they are always there trying to bring women down. It is saddening to see that even in contemporary era our women are still struggling to get their basic rights. Though, the odds are scarce but hopefully sanity among men will someday prevail.

Public spaces often feel constricted in Pakistan, as though under critical male scrutiny. But over the past few days, Ali has been recruiting dozens of women, from garment workers to domestic helpers who barely get a day off. “To solve any problem, we need to make a collective effort,” she says.
On Friday, a series of International Women’s Day marches will be held in several Pakistani cities, calling for women’s place in society to be rewritten.
