The Wind Band has enjoyed a long and rich association with the March - music composed to assist or escort the movement of groups of people, sometimes for military, other times for dignified or ceremonial functions. The 10 works in this collection represent historic as well as more current examples by highly-regarded composers from eight countries. They span the range of the solemn funeral march to a lilting children’s tune and from ceremonial pomp to brash exuberance.

Courtly Airs and Dances by Ron Nelson continues the theme of moving people around, though in song and dance, rather than in a march. Nelson, one of the most significant composers for wind band, has drawn the source material for this work from characteristic Renaissance dances of the 1500s from France, England, Italy, Spain, and Germany.
