I used a 1/8" NTP pipe nipple and it's 6" in length. The length isn't important as long as it's long enough to go through the material you are cutting and a little gap between the drill chuck and the workpiece. The pipe nipple isn't sharp and has just a slight angle at the tip. I hit the threads on the nipple with a flap disk on my 4.5" grinder. This also works on a number of other materials like rubber and cork gasket material. Make sure you have a sharp utility blade and use caution when using that knife. As shown in the video all kinds of different foam mats work for hole covers. The darker the color the better it will work and thicker material works well too. If the ice has snow on it I also cover the edges of the hole insulator to help even more air from blowing across the edges.
