The Getting Ahead program at St. Vincent de Paul Fond du Lac County reflects our commitment to systemic change to alleviate poverty. This financial empowerment workshop helps individuals break the cycle of poverty, offering them the tools to move from financial insecurity to self-sufficiency.

Our 10-module investigative program supports participants as they explore the root causes of poverty and identify personal and community resources. In small groups, led by trained volunteer facilitators, participants share experiences and find solutions to their challenges. Through this collaborative environment, they develop a future story and a plan to achieve financial independence.

One of the program’s most powerful aspects is building social capital—connecting participants with others who can offer resources and support. They learn to think critically, investigate their own situation, and develop strategies for long-term success through budgeting and financial planning.

St. Vincent de Paul Fond du Lac offers three types of Getting Ahead programs: the traditional community program, a shelter-focused version, and the GAPS program for ongoing support. Over 85% of graduates report improvements in their lives after participating. Sessions include topics like art, yoga, financial insights, and health, all facilitated by local community leaders. Each session is free and includes materials, snacks, and beverages.
