Why did a YATP member speaking at a city council meeting get physically escorted out of the building, arrested, and charged with a crime?
On August 20, 2024, those attending the Surprise, AZ, City Council meeting witnessed a scene that left many in disbelief and thousands across the country appalled. Rebekah Massie was forcibly removed from the premises and arrested, a sight that no one could have anticipated. Her only crime was speaking out against a pay raise for the city attorney, a topic she felt strongly about due to its potential impact on taxpayers.
Rebekah, a dedicated wife and mother, addressed the council about her worries regarding the pay raise. However, her right to free speech was interrupted by Mayor Skip Hall, who ordered her arrest and physical removal from the building. This act of aggression and censorship took place in front of Rebekah’s ten-year-old daughter, who was left traumatized by the incident. YATP is appalled at Mayor Hall's blatant attempt to silence dissenting opinions. The First Amendment protected Rebekah’s speech, and it is despicable for an elected official to abuse their position and demand law enforcement use force against someone peacefully and respectfully engaging in a constitutionally protected act. Rebekah’s arrest has significantly impacted not only her and her family but also the entire Surprise community, potentially leading to further distrust of the city council and police department.
An elected official using violence to censor free speech should shock us all.
