It has been 5 years since I last recorded a Schubert Sonata. So much for the lofty plan to record them all ! I blame Haydn for it... he barged in and made me record all of his sonatas first. Now that's done, I can turn to Schubert once again. And then there's the Beethoven sonatas to consider... so much to do, so little time !

Anyway, here is a very early Schubert Sonata, the one in C major, D.279, which was written in 1815 when the composer was only 18 years old, and which sadly seems to have lost its 4th movement, thus ending with a minuet which was probably not the intention. It's not vintage Schubert yet, but his imagination, ambition and virtuosity already run rampant. I've been mulling over this sonata for several years, finding it very difficult in places, maybe perhaps more so than the mature sonatas which (although also difficult) generally lie better under the fingers.

Please excuse the weird desynchronization in the middle of the slow movement. I don't know what happened but the video channel was corrupted for a while (around the page turn, to make it worse), and it was a bit of a hit-and-miss to get it on track with the audio again. Also sorry about the video over-exposure in the last movement, I wasn't aware of this when recording.
