“The mind of the boss, assuming he had a mind of his own, was always made up of opinions of others. He lent his ear, arching his semi-circular eyebrows and with a sharp inhalation of breath, to all the gossip going on around him. When you tried to reason with him, your words would fall on his eardrums like drops of water on a hot frying pan; your sane argument would simmer and vanish inside his head without making an impression. In short, he was an amateur listener.

In my new book, I argue that mature listening is the most powerful tool in leadership. The listener matures through three-stage of listening: the factual, the intentional, and finally the transformational. Mahavira, a contemporary of Buddha, described transformational listeners as 'shravakas': they were people who would learn and seek enlightenment just by deep listening.”
