In honor of February 21, International Mother Language Day, we’re excited to share this video message from linguist and children's author Victor D.O. Santos. Selected by UNESCO as the official book for the United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032) and as a Best Book of 2024 in the USA, his book What Makes Us Human has already been published in 35 different languages in partnership with UNESCO—including, as of today, Hawaiian! What makes What Makes Us Human, a riddle-format book about the importance of all languages, so special is that it's part of a larger movement to celebrate cultural diversity through language: each new language edition helps give speakers of that language a sense of pride in their language and provides an opportunity for children of the next generation to engage with their heritage language. And not only that: Victor continues to support language revitalization by ensuring that a portion of the proceeds from the book’s sales goes directly to language preservation projects—including Wikitongues, the Living Tongues Institute, and 7000 Languages.
