Circuit Zolder OnBoard Safety Car POV

A lap at the Circuit of Zolder (Belgium) by the Safety Car. The Safety Car was driven by circuit director Harry Steegmans and filmed by me, during my track visit on June 23, 2022.

Circuit Zolder is a permanent race track in Belgium. It opened in 1963 and was designed by Dutchman John Hugenholtz.

From 1973 to 1984 it hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix 9 times. Two times it was alternated. First with Nivelles, which hosted the Grand Prix in 1972 and 1974. Later with the renewed Spa-Francorchamps which was back on the calendar in 1983. It was intended that Zolder and Spa-Francorchamps should alternate the Belgian Grand Prix. However, since 1985 Forula One remained at Spa-Francorchamps.

Sad enough, Circuit Zolder became most famous as the track where Gilles Villeneuve lost his life after a crash during the 1982 F1 qualifying.

The layout of the Zolder Circuit was several times adjusted. First 3 chicanes were built for safety reasons. More recent also the first corner was moved inside, to create a safer pit exit and bigger run-off area. Funny enough, the pit exit is now where the original first corner was.
