Should 18-year-olds be allowed to carry guns in Tennessee without obtaining a permit?

Tennessee lawmakers are pushing legislation that would allow just that.

HB1005/SB1503 lowers the minimum age requirements from 21 to 18 for enhanced, lifetime enhanced and concealed gun carry permits.

What's more, this bill would apply for all firearms, not just handguns.

This week, the bill was referred to both the House and Senate's Finance, Ways and Means Committees.

Bill supporters say it’s about preserving constitutional rights.

But some disagree.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, the State Department of Safety, and representatives from Governor Bill Lee’s office all spoke out against the bill in a recent hearing.

The groups say they’re concerned about the risk this could pose to law enforcement officers, and the panic that could ensue if people see someone walking down a busy street with a rifle.
