In training films or scenarios, you often see two actors sitting and talking. Person A says something, and then there's a cut to an "over-the-shoulder" (a reverse shot) of Person B responding. The dialogue ping-pongs back and forth between them. It kinda works, but it's also kinda boring. How can you improve your scenario training film without spending ANY extra money?

Sage Media is often hired to produce compelling narrative content - which is actually different than a scenario film, even though there's overlap. (We can explain that at another time). This project helps viewers learn how to effectively run a performance evaluation session, especially one in which the exchange isn't so smooth. In our case, a manager gives his employee the great news that she's being promoted. She is not, however, as happy as we expected - mainly because she thinks the time frame for the transition is far too drawn out. The manager must now defend his position, swaying her to understand his choice in such a way that she doesn't feel dejected or unheard - while also avoiding too heavy of a compromise on the time.

Instead of shooting this scene in a novel environment or with crazy-weird lenses, we were able to keep the content fresh, engaging, and emotionally compelling simply by having our camera angles reinforce the perspective of the character we want audiences to identify with. As that identification changes, and learners begin to see the point of the opposition, we use this same lens angle technique to shift empathy to the opposing side. This back and forth of viewpoint allows us to quickly connect with characters that haven't had time to share their backstory. So viewers identify with one perspective fast, but they can also be flexible in their thinking and can shift to understand different viewpoints. This technique can generate a LOT of useful discussions during a debrief.
